Example labels

These three were made by the same code that runs the tool above, on a 4 x 2 inch label. We tested the encoder by decoding its output with the open source zxing-cpp reader: every test code, on every sheet layout listed below, scanned back to the value we typed.

The four barcode types

Sizes for EAN-13 follow the GS1 size guide: a nominal bar width of 0.330 mm, a minimum of 0.264 mm, and a quiet zone of 11 bar widths on the left and 7 on the right. The tool warns you when a label is too small for those limits.

Label sheets

Label sizes and counts come from Avery's template pages, such as 5160 and 5163. Margins are the layout used by common label templates. Sheets from other brands with the same code number usually match, but print a test page first.

Printing labels is often the first sign that stock needs more than a count per product. If each unit needs its own serial number and history, read why serialized inventory can't run on counts, or see what we build for retail and POS.

Questions clients ask

Short answers, no sales language. If yours isn't here, ask an engineer directly.

Ask us anything
Is this barcode label generator really free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, and no limit on labels. It runs in your browser, so the codes, names, and prices you type are never sent to us or anyone else.

Can I make my own EAN-13 or UPC-A numbers?

For products sold through other retailers, no. Those numbers should come from GS1, which licenses them. GS1 US listed a single GTIN at $30 with no renewal fee when we checked on 2026-10-14. For codes used only inside your own store, use Code 128 with your own SKU, or ask your local GS1 office about restricted circulation numbers.

Which barcode type should I use for shelf labels?

Use the product's EAN-13 or UPC-A if it has one, so the label scans the same as the box. For your own SKUs, bins, and serial numbers, use Code 128. Use a QR code when the label should open a web page, such as a spec sheet or a reorder form.

Why do my labels print in the wrong place?

Most often the print dialog is scaling the page. Set scale to 100% or "Actual size" and margins to none. If the labels are still a millimetre or two off, use the nudge fields and print again on plain paper.

Does it work with a Zebra, DYMO, or Brother label printer?

Yes, through the normal print dialog. Pick "Roll or thermal printer", enter the label size in millimetres, and print. Each label becomes one page. The tool doesn't send printer languages such as ZPL.
